Let's say you go shopping twice a week and use 3 shopping bags each time, that would add up to a ridiculous 300 plastic bags per year. A single plastic bag can take up to 1000 years to degrade, but not before breaking down into smaller particles that are ingested by animals. This then means that the plastic will end up in our food chain.
But don't worry, no one's expecting you to carry all of your shopping out of the shop, like a human Buckaroo. There are plenty of reusable shopping bags to choose from that you can use every time you go shopping.
One of the best types of reusable shopping bags to invest in is hessian. Hessian is a wonder material as it's strong, sustainable, cheap and most importantly, biodegradable. Hessian bags can be bought from many places both online and in stores. It's recommended to have at least 2-3 of these bags in different places to make sure you don't forget them. You could have one in the boot of your car, one by the front door and one folded up in your handbag (if it's big enough).
The most important thing is to not be hard on yourself if you do forget to bring your bag with you to the shops. Having it 3/5 trips is better than none at all. You'll soon get into the habit of taking it in with you.
These bags aren't only useful for food shopping but should be taken clothes shopping too! You'll be surprised at the amount they can hold!
Come back tomorrow for composting!
