Meet the Chief Editor
Hello! My name is Hannah Needham, I am 21 years old and a Forensic and Applied Biology BSc graduate.
I have always been a very creative person and absolutely love fashion, writing and baking. But then again, I was also quite academic and discovered my passion for Biology in secondary school. When I had decided to go to the University of Worcester to study Forensic and Applied Biology, I had told myself that from now on, my creativity was going to have to be pushed aside and reserved as a hobby.
During my time at University, I went through hundreds of career options in my head, but never felt truly excited by any of them. That was until I discovered Science Communication and realised that it was exactly what I wanted to do! From there, I started up a science blog and aimed it at people who didn't know very much about science and it went down a treat! I loved writing the blogs and people loved reading them! I got a real thrill from it and continued to write in my spare time.
Halfway through my second year, I suffered from a massive Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot on the lungs), caused by taking The Pill. This was a huge eye-opener for me and made me realise that life was too short to settle. It also made me realise how important it was for people to have an understanding of science. Once I recovered, I wrote a blog educating people on how The Pill can cause blood clots and the warning signs.
Towards the end of my degree, Wonk! was born. I had been thinking for a long time about a way to connect all of my passions and share that with the world. My idea for Wonk! was to bridge the gap between fashion and science, and to show teenagers that science doesn't mean sacrificing your other hobbies, in place of lab coats and safety goggles!
My message to all young people out there is to do what makes you happy, stay curious and don't let people stand in the way of your goals!
I hope you enjoy reading Wonk! as much as I love creating it.
25 Questions with the Chief Editor
1! Do you like your name?
I love my first name, mainly because it's the same spelt backwards... not that that's ever been useful to me! I used to hate my middle name (Frances) because I thought it was a boys name, but I've got over that and now I don't mind it!
2! Where were you born?
I was born in Northampton and have lived here ever since!
3! Do you have any special talents?
I used to be able to turn my feet around, until they were pointing backwards, but I've put an end to that party trick as I don't think it does my ankles, knees or hips any good!
4! How tall are you?
5! What was your worst subject in school?
Geography. I'm still absolutely terrible at it... my sense of direction is the worst, if I say right, it's probably left.
6! What is your favourite animal?
Penguins all the way! What's not to love? They're cuddly and clumsy and that is all we need in an animal.
7! What is your favourite quote?
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." -Albert Einstein
8! What's your favourite season?
I love all seasons for different reasons, but if I had to choose one, I would say Spring! All the baby animals and sunshine makes me so happy. It's also my birthday, but I'll pretend that doesn't influence my decision...
9! What is your favourite film genre?
It depends on my mood! You can never go wrong with a good Rom Com, but I also love a Thriller!
10! What did you want to be when you were younger?
I had huge ambition as a child. My main career goal was to be a mermaid, or if that failed I would have settled for being a Tweenie! 19 years on and I can confirm that I do not currently have a tail nor am I best friends with Fizz and Bella...
11! Would you sing Karaoke?
I would and I have. My personal favourite karaoke song is Superbass by Nicki Minaj... unconventional, I know!
12! If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A buffet. Is that cheating? I don't care.
13! Do you like surprises?
I love surprises, but I'm really annoying in the time leading up to them... I will constantly ask for hints and clues!
14! How often do you buy clothes?
I know the first step of recovery is admitting... but I'm not ready to admit the extent of my clothing addiction!
15! What kitchen appliance do you use everyday?
The kettle... many times! I am a serial tea drinker (milk and no sugar please!).
16! Do you love or hate rollercoasters?
I hate the thought of them, but I love the adrenaline afterwards!
17! What do you do to keep fit?
I try to go to the gym as often as I can and have started trying to get into running as I've always been terrible at it! I was that child at school who always managed to find their way out of Cross Country.
18! Would you class a Hot Dog as a sandwich?
Oh... I have never thought about it! I suppose it is... but maybe it isn't... my brain hurts!
19! What's something weird that you recommend everyone tries at least once?
Milkshake and fries... I'm so sorry if that makes you cringe...
20! What's one thing you've never been able to do well?
Accents! Apart from Australian... that, I can nail.
21! Which is your favourite Harry Potter film?
It used to be the Goblet of Fire, but I watched it too many times! Now I would say it's the Half-Blood Prince!
22! Would you rather give up savoury or sweet food?
As much as I love sweet food, there's nothing quite like savoury! I think I would miss having savoury food much more than I would sweet.
23! If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Transportation! How cool would it be to appear anywhere, at anytime?! No more time spent travelling or paying fares... perfection.
24! Which of the seven dwarves do you relate to the most?
Definitely Sleepy! There isn't a day that goes by that I don't yawn or rub my eyes. I am ready for a nap 24/7!
25! Lastly, does pineapple belong on pizza?
100%! The best pizza is BBQ base with chicken, sweetcorn, mushroom and pineapple. Would definitely recommend.
