Meet the Scientist

Jayde Frederick

Biomedical Sciences Student at Oakwood University

What scientific field do you study?

Biomedical Sciences

"I'd be Zendaya... I'd love to live a day in her shoes!"

Could you briefly explain what your course involves?

A lot of math and science courses including Organic Chemistry, Psychology, Biochemistry, Physics and Calculus. It's also important to get real work experience so shadowing and research projects are also helpful for my course.

Do you have any secret talents?

I really enjoy dancing, although I don't do it as often anymore.

When did you decide you wanted to become a scientist?

Ever since I was little I remember wanting to have a career in the healthcare field. At first, I was interested in being a vet but then I realised I like communicating with people over animals!

What's your favourite food?

I love Caribbean food, specifically Roti and Chicken Curry

What educational pathway did you take to get to where you are now?

Throughout high school, I took a lot of maths and sciences and made sure that my GPA and standardised test scores were high. I also took a few AP courses so that my load in college could be a little less.

What's your favourite movie quote?

"So yes, they let women do some things at NASA, Mr Johnson, and it's not because we wear skirts. It's because we wear glasses."

-Hidden Figures

"...I like communicating with people over animals"

What was the best thing about your course?

Recognising things I've learned in class and being able to apply them to my everyday life.

What was the worst thing about your course?

Studying, it takes up quite a bit of time.

"I...made sure my GPA and standardised test scores were high."

If you could take one thing with you to an island, what would it be and why?

I'd probably take my iPad because I use it for almost everything. Hopefully the island has WiFi! If there's no WiFi then I'd most likely take a good book.

Have you taken part in any research?

Yes! Right now I am participating in research to make a biocompatible bandage to heal damaging cuts using nanofibres.

If you could be anyone in the world for 24 hours, who would you be?

I would be Zendaya, she's an amazing actress, singer and dancer, and I'd love to live a day in her shoes

Would you recommend your course to others that are interested?

Yes, I would, I think I've learned a lot so far in a small amount of time, without being stressed beyond my limits.
