The Science Behind Jade Facial Rollers
6th February 2019
In this day and age, it’s easy to find new trends. All you have to do is open up your Instagram feed to find a host of influencers selling the Next Big Thing. So, the other day when I opened my feed to see a bunch of women using gorgeous, green, mini rolling pins on their faces, naturally, I was intrigued. Turns out, there’s a lot of history behind these tiny, beautiful tools.
Jade facial rollers are an ancient beauty instrument; jade was used among early Egyptians and Mayans for their cooling properties, and rollers have been used in Chinese skincare since at least the 7th century. Nowadays, if you search #jaderollers on Instagram, over 36 thousand posts pop up. It made me wonder, what is it about jade rollers that make them such a timeless beauty tool?

The jade roller functions as a mini masseuse for your face. Our faces hold a lot of tension (just check your facial muscles — you’re probably clenching your jaw or holding tension in your forehead as you read this, so this is your friendly reminder to relax!). The facial rollers work to release tension in some of these spots, especially places that are prone to wrinkles as you get older.
Jade rollers also help increase circulation to get that dewy, naturally-glowing skin we all desperately want (even though we only got 5 hours of sleep the night before). Your body has a lymphatic system, which basically helps to collect toxins and send them to the body’s waste system. The massage provided by jade rollers can boost circulation and assist your lymphatic system as it drains toxins and restores fluid balance in your tissues. The naturally cooling properties of jade help to decrease puffiness and inflammation as well. A lot of people will also keep their jade rollers in the fridge to enhance the cooling relief, which is especially helpful to banish eye bags.

As an added bonus, they’re super easy to use. Take your jade roller out of the fridge, and start from the centre of your forehead and roll out to the sides. Repeat this same motion across your cheeks from nose to ear, across your chin, and down your neck. Use the smaller end for around your eyes, and try to always roll from the centre to the outside edges of your face. Using the roller after applying your favourite moisturizer or oil to your face will help your skin absorb and retain the product too, to maximize its benefits.
To top it all off, the jade rollers are just so pretty! We love things that are functional and beautiful at the same time, and these jade rollers fit the bill. So next time your favourite influencer is promoting a jade roller, just know that the science is there to back them up. Why not try one out? It may become your new favourite tool!
