Meet the Scientist
Trainee Biomedical Scientist at Northampton General Hospital
What scientific field do you work in?
"... knowledge of diseases makes me paraniod.."
Could you briefly explain what your job involves?
I am on my placement year in a hospital laboratory where I have rotated across 4 key pathology disciplines. We receive all types of patient samples and carry out analytical tests for indications of diseases and investigate treatment options. Each discipline works on different types of specimens, for example Microbiology handles wound swabs and faecal matter etc while histology works with sections of tissue and organs. Blood sciences work with (you guessed it) blood!
Do you have any secret talents?
My fingers are double jointed and bend in horrible ways, it’s always fun to show new people!
When did you decide you wanted to work as a scientist?
My grandfather was a Biology teacher and that really sparked my interest in biology and disease!
What's your favourite food?
Salmon. Smoked salmon, boiled salmon, fried salmon…any salmon!
What educational pathway did you take to get to where you are now?
GCSE’s including Triple Science, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science and currently doing a degree in Biomedical Science at Sheffield Hallam University.
"I cannot function without my coffee!"
What's your favourite movie quote?
“There is some good in the world, Mr Frodo, and its worth fighting for”
– Samwise Gamgee, Lord of the Rings.
What's the best thing about your job?
Knowing that every day you are contributing to the care of many patients is a very rewarding part of the job. I also enjoy the constant learning and development involved in this career, there’s always something new to learn.
"Smoked salmon, boiled salmon, fried salmon..."
What's the worst thing about your job?
Having an extensive knowledge of diseases makes me paranoid every time I start to feel a little off!
If you could be anyone in the world for 24 hours, who would you be?
I would be Benedict Cumberbatch just because I really love his accent!
If you could take one thing with you to an island, what would it be and why?
A good coffee machine. I cannot function without my coffee!
